Club Member Event on 12th March 2011

March 3, 2011 in Events by Annie

After a deferral of our event from 6th March due to rain, we finally held our member event on 12th March 2011 to visit the famous site of Nanjing – Meihua Shan 梅花山 (Plum Blossom Hill), which is part of the Zijin Mountain 紫金山 and famous for its plum blossoms in spring.

We had amazing weather, a lot of fun and good food, but also a lot of people surrounding us, too! But it did not matter too much. At the end, we found a quiet place to relax and play cards and had a wonderful time. Check out the nice pictures we took and come join us in our next event!

Our Club Speech Contest 2011

February 25, 2011 in Events by Helen Reumann

“It was a real competition this time!”, said Jerel, our former president and founding member of the club. We have never had so many contestants participating to our Club Speech Contest in the past. And this time, there is even such a well balanced mix of participants of different background and Toastmasters’ experience, reflecting the very healthy development of our club!

On February 22nd and 23rd, the International Speech as well as the Mandarin Speech and Table Topic Contest 2011 of our Nanjing No. 1 Toastmasters Club took place at our usual meeting venue. In total, 6 contestants were competing against each other for the International Speech Contest title, 4 contestants for the Mandarin Speech Contest title, and 5 contestants for the Table Topic Contest title. The 1st Prize winner of each of the contests will go to Wuxi on March 20th to represent our Nanjing No. 1 Toastmasters Club to fight for the area level award. While the Mandarin and Table Topic winners will not go further then to Xiamen, where the Greater China Contest will take place this May, the winner of the International Speech Contest will even have the chance to go to the United States for participating to the global Speech Contest! How exciting!

All in all, we had two wonderful nights full of joy, excitement, and surprises (see also Events/Gallery -> Club Speech Contest 2011). Please join us congratulating the winners of our Club Contest:

1) International Speech Contest: 1st Prize – Jerel Bonner, 2nd Prize – Katie Zhang, 3rd Prize – Tina Li
2) Mandarin Speech Contest: 1st Prize – Katie Zhang, 2nd Prize – Wenbin Liang (only two prizes for Mandarin Speech Contest)
3) Table Topic Contest: 1st Prize – Leinie Zhang, 2nd Prize – Tina Li, 3rd Prize – Wenbin Liang

And good luck to all the 1st Prize winners for the Area Speech Contest in Wuxi!

You can find the photos of this event in our Events/Gallery section. Look forward to having many more of such joint events in the future!

Club Event 28 Nov 2010

November 30, 2010 in Events by Helen Reumann

Apart from the contacts of asking people take over roles, to accept and prepare for roles and to perform and evaluate during the meetings, we also want that members exchange themselves and have fun with each other outside of our official meetings.

On 28 November 2010, a Club Event took place with around 12 members to first have a KTV session and a yummy hot pot dinner afterwards. Check out for the photos taken during this event!

Stayed tuned for the next meeting and hope to see you there!

The First Time as TME(Toastmaster of Evening)

October 28, 2009 in Educational, Events, General by Wen Bin

Yesterday, I was “Toastmaster for the Evening” for the first time. The toastmaster is responsible for organising the evening’s main speakers and other participants, and for introducing each participant to the audience. It’s a chance to be the host for the whole two hour event.

It was a learning experience. Here comes the summary:

What I did OK:

–Successfully kept the whole process smoothly running.
–Tried the new way to introduce speakers before the speech, from their expertise, background, name etc.
–Tried to make some funny comments, though few laugh.

What I can do better:
–As a TME, you got to control the whole situation like: start the meeting on time, stop the speaker in case his/her time really running out etc. Follow the Toastmaster rule, this is the excellent point Rex made yesterday.
–Role Announcement.I DID introduce the time keeper/ah counter but  forget to mention evaluator.
–Transition comments between the speaks is made in  kind of  rush. How to make it more seamlessly and naturally ?

You fail fast, you grow fast !!
Cheers,
Terrance

Launching Toastmasters: October 13th

October 3, 2009 in Events by ntmadmin

Dear Friends,
We were very pleased that more than 20 people showed up at our first info meeting, and now we are confident that we can start having real meetings soon.
Based on the questionnaire we received from participants at last month’s info meeting, we have decided that starting October after the National Holiday, we will begin to hold weekly meetings every Tuesday night from 19:15 until 20:45 at Kongzi Academy, starting from October the 13th.
We are hoping to have sufficient people at the next meeting willing to sign up and pay the membership fees.   We would need at least 15 members will to join  in order to get started.  Eventually we hope at getting around 30 people actively involved in Nanjing Toastmasters, which should be no problem in a city this big!   So if you are already ready to join at this point and become a co-founder of Nanjing Toastmasters, please reply send an email to info@nanjingtoastmasters.com  with the subject “I am ready to join Toastmasters TODAY!”.
We are still figuring out the exact budget, but for certain it will be no more than 600 RMB per individual on a half-year basis, which covers initial membership fee, a half-year membership for 24 weekly meetings and the Toastmaster’s starter kits.
Either way, the details of our next meeting:
Venue: Kongzi Academy in Confucius Temple Area;
Date: Oct 13 Tuesday;
Time: 7:15-8:45PM.
Please confirm your attendance by replying to this mail by Oct 11.
We are looking forward to see you all at the discussion meeting on Oct 13.

Please see attached map for details. Kongzi Academy is in the second floor of the large old building in backyard of the Confucius Temple.
