After exchanging valuable experiences from other excellent toastmasters while enjoying wonderful seafood, three members from our club Katie, Tina and Jerel came back from the Xiamen Spring Conference 2011. The conference is held twice a year for the Toastmasters District 85 – this means Toastmasters members of Greater China, Hong Kong and Macau.

And this year, guess how many people attended? 1000! Let me repeat, ONE THOUSAND! During 13 – 15 May 2011, on the campus nearby a beautiful Beach in Xiamen, wonderful speeches were held throughout the entire event. From prepared speeches in the contest to conversations between members all around China, the whole meeting provided a harmonious and friendly atmosphere to improve English speaking and to learn from each other. Amongst the interesting and insightful workshops, Rory Vaden, a VIP speaker, taught the members to apply the “A.L.I.V.E.” rule to keep any audience awake during their presentations. “A.L.I.V.E.” refers to “Attentive”, “Laugh”, “Interested”, “Vulnerable” and “Engaged”. All in all, it was a memorable experience for everyone who attended the meeting.

Don’t forget our heroes who bring the honors to our club! Jerel was one of the judges of the Toastmasters International Speech Contest on District Level and Tina was elected to become the Division Q Governor.

Missed this meeting? Don’t worry! The next Winter Conference will be in Hong Kong and the next Spring Conference even around the corner in Hangzhou. Be prepared and maybe you can be one of the champions!

In order to widen our horizon and look at how other clubs are doing, we had two joint meetings in Shanghai on Sunday, 24th April 2011!

Joint meeting means that members of both clubs will take over roles in the meeting, while they will be hosted in the Shanghai club locations. The clubs we had joint meetings with are the Shanghai Pudong Toastmasters Club and the 5A+ Shanghai Toastmasters Club.

Our first started already at 10 am with the Pudong club. It was a <a href="http://nanjingtmc.blog.sohu.com/171663838.html"target="_Blank">meeting full of joy and great experience. After having lunch with some of the Pudong members, we moved on with the next meeting at 4 pm.We then had our next joint meeting with the 5A+ club in the Jing’an area of Puxi. After another nice dinner and intensive networking with the 5A+ members, we all caught the evening train back to Nanjing.

Sounds good to you? Stay tuned for our next events / joint meetings with other clubs!

“It was a real competition this time!”, said Jerel, our former president and founding member of the club. We have never had so many contestants participating to our Club Speech Contest in the past. And this time, there is even such a well balanced mix of participants of different background and Toastmasters’ experience, reflecting the very healthy development of our club!

On February 22nd and 23rd, the International Speech as well as the Mandarin Speech and Table Topic Contest 2011 of our Nanjing No. 1 Toastmasters Club took place at our usual meeting venue. In total, 6 contestants were competing against each other for the International Speech Contest title, 4 contestants for the Mandarin Speech Contest title, and 5 contestants for the Table Topic Contest title. The 1st Prize winner of each of the contests will go to Wuxi on March 20th to represent our Nanjing No. 1 Toastmasters Club to fight for the area level award. While the Mandarin and Table Topic winners will not go further then to Xiamen, where the Greater China Contest will take place this May, the winner of the International Speech Contest will even have the chance to go to the United States for participating to the global Speech Contest! How exciting!

All in all, we had <a href="http://nanjingtmc.blog.sohu.com/167696336.html" target="_blank"">two wonderful nights full of joy, excitement, and surprises (see also Events/Gallery -> Club Speech Contest 2011). Please join us congratulating the winners of our Club Contest:

1) International Speech Contest: 1st Prize – Jerel Bonner, 2nd Prize – Katie Zhang, 3rd Prize – Tina Li
2) Mandarin Speech Contest: 1st Prize – Katie Zhang, 2nd Prize – Wenbin Liang (only two prizes for Mandarin Speech Contest)
3) Table Topic Contest: 1st Prize – Leinie Zhang, 2nd Prize – Tina Li, 3rd Prize – Wenbin Liang

And good luck to all the 1st Prize winners for the Area Speech Contest in Wuxi!
